Five Alleged Russian Agents Charged in Plot Against Kasparov

  • In mid-September, the U.S. government charged five alleged Russian agents with plotting to assassinate a “prominent Russian dissident” living in the U.S., identified in the indictment only as “Victim-1”; the report notes there is very little doubt it was Kasparov.
  • Kasparov fled Russia in 2013; his anti-Putin group, the Free Russia Forum, was listed as a “terrorist organization” by Putin’s government in 2025.
  • All five defendants remain at large, including the alleged hitmen in the U.S. who had been hired to target Kasparov.
  • The FBI told Kasparov to be “cautious and look out for your security,” per the report.
  • Kasparov’s Free Russia Forum co-founder, Ivan Tyutrin, lives in Lithuania and appears in the indictment as “Victim-2”; Lithuanian officials have told Tyutrin his life was in grave danger.
  • Kasparov said he would be surprised if the plot could have advanced that far without a direct order from Putin; that is his statement, not a fact independently verified here.
Removed: the headline’s characterization of Putin’s intent, the “you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes” framing of the deduction, the characterization of Russia’s history of killing Putin’s opponents, and the subscription paywall pitch.
