Four Massachusetts Lawmakers Ask FAA for New Environmental Review of Amazon Drone Hub in Westborough
- A group of Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday urged the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct a new environmental review before allowing an Amazon Prime Air drone delivery hub located about 30 miles west of Boston, as reported by Reuters.
- Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren and Representatives Jim McGovern and Lori Trahan, all Massachusetts Democrats, wrote to FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford seeking the review, according to the report.
- The lawmakers cited concerns raised by communities about the planned Westborough hub, including noise pollution, health and safety, and privacy, according to the report.
- The FAA said it would respond directly to the lawmakers, according to the report. Amazon did not immediately comment, according to the report.
- The FAA issued a broad environmental review in July that allows qualifying drone operators to launch fleets without a site-specific environmental analysis, according to the report. That review included noise impacts of 1,150 average drone deliveries from a single hub, with drones traveling at an altitude of less than 400 feet, according to the report.
